It is vital that you understand how, why and where your weight should go when you strike. In this video lesson I talk about one secret to power generation that most people ignore, and that can seriously improve the speed and power of your strikes.
This is for boxers, martial artists and self-defence students who want to hit harder without simply getting bigger or tenser.
Why Weight Matters
A punch is not just an arm movement. It is your whole body putting force into a target. Where your weight is, and where it goes as you strike, decides how much of your body actually ends up in the punch.
Get it wrong and you are arm punching. You feel like you are hitting hard, but most of your body is doing nothing. Get it right and even a short, relaxed strike carries real weight.
How It Works
Power comes from the ground up. Your feet push, the legs and hips turn, the shoulder follows, and the fist delivers. Your weight needs to be moving in a way that supports that chain, not fighting against it.
When the weight is in the right place:
- You are balanced. You can strike and still move, defend or strike again.
- You are faster. Nothing is pulling against the movement.
- You are more powerful. More of your body mass is behind the shot.
- You are harder to counter. You are not stranded if you miss.
Common Mistakes
- Leaning in. Throwing the head and shoulders forward feels powerful but leaves you off balance.
- Weight on the back foot. Everything stays behind you and the punch is weak.
- Lifting the heels too early. You lose your connection to the ground.
- Tensing up. Tension slows you down and stops the weight transferring.
How To Practise It
Start slowly. Shadow box and pay attention to where you feel your weight as you throw each punch. Then go to the bag and compare. Throw a few shots where you deliberately get it wrong, then a few where you get it right, and feel the difference in the bag.
Do not just take my word for it. Take the time to learn it properly, test it, and see how it works for you. Once you feel it, it changes how you strike.
