The half step for kicks works exactly the same as it does for hands, just at a different distance. This video lesson looks at using the half step to make your kicks land. As always, the key is to find your distance.

It is for kickboxers, karate people and anyone who kicks and finds their kicks either fall short or jam up because they are too close.

Same Principle, Different Distance

A lot of people treat kicks as a separate subject from punches. They are not. The same principles of distance, timing and balance apply. The only real difference is range. Your legs are longer than your arms, so your kicking distance is further out.

The half step is a small adjustment of the feet that brings you into range at the right moment. It is not a big step that announces what you are about to do. It is just enough to close the gap so the kick arrives where it is meant to.

Find Your Distance

Remember to find your distance. Not your coach's, not your training partner's, yours. It depends on your height, your flexibility, which kick you are throwing and how you stand. Two people throwing the same kick can need very different distances.

Once you truly understand your distance, the fight becomes much easier. You know when you are in range and when you are not. You stop throwing kicks that cannot land, and you stop standing where your opponent can hit you for free.

Common Mistakes

  • Taking a big step, which is slow and easy to read
  • Leaning forwards to reach, which costs balance and power
  • Kicking from where you happen to be, instead of where you need to be
  • Forgetting your hands while your feet are busy

How To Practise It

Start with a partner holding a pad or a kick shield. Find the exact distance where your kick lands properly. Then have them step back a little and use a half step to close that gap before you kick. Keep the half step small and quick. Once it is consistent, have your partner move around so you must find the distance on the go. Finish each kick balanced, with your guard up.

Take It Further

The half step for the hands is part of the Learn To Box Online Course, and the same principle carries straight over to your kicks. For coaching in person, take a look at the Training Camps.
