When you understand how and why power is generated, and you understand correct positioning, you can throw multiple power shots from either side and move seamlessly between them. That is what this video lesson on posting for power is about.
It is for boxers and strikers who can hit hard with one shot but find the power disappears on the next one.
The Single Power Shot Trap
Many people have one big punch. They load up, throw it, and then have to reset before they can throw another hard shot. A good opponent sees that coming, and in the gap between shots they can counter or move.
The answer is not to throw harder. It is to be in a position where every shot can be a power shot, from either side.
What Posting Means
Posting is about how you set your weight and your base so that the body is ready to deliver power. Think of a post as a firm, balanced point your body can drive from.
When your position is right:
- Your weight is where it needs to be for the next shot
- The hips and torso are free to rotate either way
- You can throw from the lead or rear side without resetting
- You can shift your base to change sides smoothly
How Power Is Generated
Power comes from the ground, through the legs and hips, and out through the arm. The arm is just the delivery. If your base is wrong, there is nothing to drive from and the punch becomes an arm punch.
Good positioning means the base is always ready. That is how you can throw a hard hook, then another hard shot from the same side, then switch, without losing power.
How To Practise It
Build it up step by step:
- Work on stance and balance first, with the weight centred
- Shadow box slowly, feeling the weight move to set each shot
- Throw two power shots from the same side, then two from the other
- Use a heavy bag to test whether the second and third shots hit as hard as the first
- Keep the shoulders relaxed so the hips can do the work
Common Mistakes
The commonest mistake is overcommitting to one shot, so the weight ends up too far forward. The other is tensing up, which slows everything down. Stay balanced and relaxed.
