The jab is the most important punch in boxing, and the jab with a step is how you use it to close distance and take control. In this video lesson I show how to perfect the jab and step. It is for boxers and martial artists at any level who want a sharper, more reliable lead hand.

More importantly, you can take the same principles shown here and apply them to any strike to help perfect them too.

Why The Jab And Step Matters

A jab thrown from where you stand only reaches so far. Add a step and you can reach an opponent who thinks they are safe. Done well, it lets you score, set up your power punches, and control the pace.

Done badly, it leaves you off balance, lunging, and wide open to a counter. The difference is in how the step and the punch fit together.

Getting The Timing Right

The step and the jab should work as one movement. If the step comes first and then the punch, you have given your opponent a warning. If the punch goes out and the feet catch up later, you are reaching and off balance.

Things to focus on:

  • Land with the feet. The punch should arrive as the front foot lands, so the bodyweight goes into it.
  • Keep your base. Push from the back foot and do not let your feet come too close together.
  • Keep the chin down. You are moving into range, so you can be hit too.
  • Bring it back. Return the hand to guard as fast as it went out.

Principles, Not Just Technique

Remember, it is much easier to learn principles than to try to remember techniques. Timing the feet with the strike, keeping your base and protecting your head are not just jab rules. They apply to the cross, the hook, kicks and everything else.

So when you practise the jab and step, you are really practising how to move and strike at the same time.

How To Practise

Start in shadow boxing, slowly, watching your feet. Then take it to the pads, with the pad holder moving back so you have to step to reach. Finally, work on the bag, stepping in and out.
