One of the best ways to learn anything is to watch how it is done most efficiently, copy that, and then try to improve on it. That is exactly how I approach the knockout. This video lesson gives you a set of tips to add to what you already know, so you notice a real improvement in your punching power and, above all, your acceleration through the target.
It is for boxers, martial artists and anyone who hits a bag or pads and feels their shots land but do not do much damage.
Why Acceleration Matters More Than Size
Most people think knockout power comes from big muscles or a big swing. It does not. The punch that stops people is the one that is still speeding up when it arrives, and keeps travelling through the target rather than stopping on the surface.
A punch that slows down before impact gives most of its energy to the air. A punch that accelerates through gives it to the person in front of you. That is the difference between a shot that stings and a shot that switches the lights off.
How To Build It
Acceleration is a skill, so it can be trained. These are the principles I keep coming back to:
- Stay relaxed until the last moment. Tension slows you down. Tighten the fist on impact, not before.
- Aim behind the target. If you aim at the surface, your body brakes early without you knowing it.
- Let the body lead. The feet, hips and shoulders start the punch and the arm finishes it.
- Do not pull back early. Snap back after you have driven through, not before.
Common Mistakes
The biggest mistake I see is people loading up with a big wind-up. It telegraphs the shot and usually makes it slower, not faster. The second is punching "at" the bag instead of through it. Watch your bag work: if the bag slaps and swings, you are hitting the surface. If it folds and jolts, you are going through.
A knockout is dangerous for the person receiving it, so drill this on bags, pads and focus mitts, and work with control and a cooperative partner whenever you are doing partner work.
