Nobody can promise you will never get hit. But you can drastically reduce your chances of it, and that is what this video lesson is about. I call it the Front Door Technique: a defensive method that uses your backhand as an automatic shield.

It is for boxers, martial artists and anyone serious about self-defence who wants to be a harder target.

Why The Jab Matters For Defence

The jab is the most common punch thrown. It is fast, it is close to the target and it is used to set everything else up. If you can neutralise the jab, you take away a big part of your opponent's game.

That is the starting point of the Front Door Technique. Deal with the most common attack first, and everything else becomes easier.

How The Front Door Works

The idea is to keep the front door shut. Your backhand, the rear hand, sits tight to your chin. From that position it acts as a shield that is always there, ready to block, deflect or counter without you having to think about it.

The key points are simple:

  • Chin tucked: down behind the shoulder, not up in the air
  • Shoulders up: so the lead shoulder helps protect the jaw
  • Backhand tight to the chin: not drifting away or dropping
  • Body behind the guard: so a punch that lands on the hand is absorbed, not driven through

From there you can protect your head and body while staying ready to counter.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the rear hand drift away from the chin while you punch
  • Lifting the chin when you get tired
  • Reaching out to catch punches instead of letting them land on the shield
  • Standing still because you feel safe behind the guard

The guard is not a wall to hide behind. It works best combined with movement and counters.

How To Train It

Start by checking your guard in a mirror. Then have a partner throw slow jabs while you keep your backhand in place and feel the punches land on it. Gradually increase the speed. Add a counter after each block. Then bring it into light sparring with proper gear and a partner working with control.

The goal is for the backhand to stay home automatically, even when you are tired, even when you are punching. Whether you are in the ring or dealing with a situation on the street, that habit makes you a much harder target.
