This is a footwork drill that can and should be used by everyone, regardless of what you train and what level you are at. Boxer, karateka, kickboxer, self-defence student: it does not matter. If you stand on your feet to fight, your feet decide a lot of what happens.

In this video lesson I take you through the drill and its progressions. The key is to build up incrementally to the higher level versions, and to build up the intensity and ferocity as you progress.

Why Footwork Comes First

Every punch, kick and strike starts from the ground. If your feet are in the wrong place, your power is wrong, your balance is wrong and your defence is wrong. Good footwork puts you in range when you want to hit and out of range when you do not.

Most people neglect it because it is not as exciting as hitting things. That is a mistake. The fighters who move well are always harder to deal with.

Build It Up Incrementally

The biggest mistake with any footwork drill is rushing to the hard version. Do it in stages:

  • Learn the pattern: slowly, with your full attention on where your feet go
  • Keep your structure: guard up, balance centred, no crossing the feet
  • Add speed: only when the pattern is clean
  • Add intensity: more snap, more movement, more ferocity
  • Add the hands: once the feet look after themselves

Each level should feel comfortable before you move to the next. If it falls apart, go back a step.

What Good Footwork Looks Like

When I watch someone move, I look for a few things:

  • Small, light steps rather than big lunges
  • The weight staying between the feet, never over-committed
  • The head and guard staying in place while the feet work
  • The ability to stop, change direction or punch at any moment

If you can do the drill and still be ready to hit or defend at every point, you are doing it right.

Make It Part Of Every Session

Footwork improves with regular practice, not occasional bursts. Put this drill in your warm-up. Do it before bag work. Do it between rounds. A few minutes every session adds up very quickly, and before long the movement becomes yours.
