This is one of our live Tuesday webinars, nearly an hour long, with my guest Paul Butlin. Paul is a former student of mine. He has boxed Anthony Joshua, been a sparring partner to Tyson Fury, and has also been involved in shootings. We talk about boxing training, door work and more.

It is for boxers, coaches, door staff and security, and anyone interested in how ring experience and real-world experience fit together.

Why Ring Experience Matters

Boxing is one of the best foundations there is for anyone who might need to defend themselves. It teaches you to hit, to take a hit, to manage distance and to keep your head under pressure. Sparring in particular teaches you things that drills alone never will, because the other person is trying to hit you back.

People who have been in the ring at a high level have a very honest view of what works. When someone has shared a ring with heavyweights of that level, they know exactly how fast, strong and skilful the top end is.

Where Boxing and Door Work Overlap

Door work and security bring a different set of problems. You cannot always choose who you deal with. You may have to control someone rather than knock them out. Everything you do may be judged afterwards. And there may be more than one person, or a weapon.

Some boxing skills carry over directly:

  • Distance management and footwork
  • Keeping your hands up and your chin down
  • Staying calm while someone is aggressive in front of you
  • Reading body language and spotting the moment before an attack

Other things have to be added, such as control techniques, awareness of the law, and how to de-escalate. Any force used must be reasonable for the situation.

Why Listen to Long Conversations

A long webinar gives time for real detail. You hear about training routines, mindset and what actually happens in difficult situations, rather than a neat sixty-second clip. If you work in security or coach boxing, there is a lot to take from a conversation like this.

Training Lessons for Everyone

Even if you never step into a ring or work a door, the lessons apply. Train honestly. Spar with control. Learn from people who have tested their skills. And keep the basics sharp, because under pressure the basics are all you have.

Take It Further

For boxing technique, the Learn To Box Online Course is the place to start. If you work the door or in security, the PPDT Online Course was built for exactly that kind of work.
