Good footwork is the foundation of good boxing, and this drill is a workout all on its own. In this video lesson I show a beginner footwork drill that trains your body to move in the correct way to defend, to defend and counter, or to attack.

It is aimed at beginners, but anyone who wants better movement can use it. You can change the speed and the intensity to suit your level of fitness.

Why Footwork Comes First

Every punch you throw starts from the ground. If your feet are in the wrong place, your balance is off, your power is weak and you are easy to hit. Most beginners want to work on their hands. The ones who get good quickly are the ones who sort out their feet.

Good footwork lets you:

  • Get into range to land your shots
  • Get out of range before the reply comes back
  • Move off the line of attack instead of straight back
  • Stay balanced, so you can punch at any moment

Making The Drill Harder

The beauty of a drill like this is that it grows with you. Once the basic pattern is comfortable, you can make it tougher:

  • Add speed. Move faster, but only as fast as you can stay balanced.
  • Add intensity. Work harder for shorter bursts.
  • Add angles. Instead of only forwards and back, step off to the sides and pivot.
  • Bend the legs more. Sitting a little lower increases the workout and builds strength in the legs.

Common Mistakes

  • Crossing the feet. If your feet cross, you can be knocked off balance with a light push.
  • Feet too close together. You lose your base and your power.
  • Heavy, flat feet. Stay light on the balls of the feet, without bouncing high.
  • Looking at the floor. Keep your eyes up. In a fight you will not be watching your feet.

How To Practise It

Do the drill in rounds, just as you would on the bag. Start slow and get the pattern right. Then build up the pace for a round or two. Finish with a round where you add a jab or a simple combination as you move, so the footwork and the punching start to work together.

A few minutes of this at the start of every session will change your boxing quicker than almost anything else.
