By using the waveform movement, we can make locks that are totally crippling, with ease. In this long video lesson I show how the waveform changes the way a lock works. Remember, this is the A, B, C of an A to Z, shown slowly. Imagine what it is like at full speed.

This lesson is for anyone whose locks feel like a strength contest, or who has been told locks do not work in a real situation.

Why Locks Often Fail

The usual way to apply a lock is to grab the joint and push against it, slowly and with force. The problem is that the other person feels it coming and resists. If they are stronger or tense, the lock turns into a wrestling match.

That is where a lot of people give up on locks altogether.

What The Waveform Changes

A waveform is a relaxed, flowing movement of the body that sends energy through the target, rather than pushing at it with tension. I use it in striking, and it applies to locks just as well.

When you apply a lock with a waveform:

  • The energy arrives quickly, before the person can tense against it
  • It travels through the joint and into the body, not just the limb
  • It takes the balance at the same time as it locks the joint
  • It needs far less strength from you

The result is a lock that is much more painful and much harder to resist, for much less effort. That is why I say no effort.

How To Practise It

Learning waveform locks takes patience:

  • Learn the shape of the lock slowly and correctly first
  • Practise the waveform movement on its own, relaxed and flowing
  • Combine the two very slowly, with a cooperative partner
  • Feel how the energy moves through your partner's body
  • Increase speed only a tiny amount at a time

Train With Control

This is essential. Waveform locks can damage joints very quickly. Always train slowly, with control, with a cooperative partner you trust, and let them tap or signal early. Never apply them at speed in practice. In self-defence, only use force that is reasonable for the situation.

Common Mistakes

The commonest mistake is reverting to muscle as soon as the partner resists. Stay relaxed. The second is going too fast too soon.
