Training when you are away from home is a pure lifestyle choice. In this short video lesson I talk about holidays, travel and whether you should keep training, plus some tips for learning at a faster rate.
After all, a holiday is a holiday. There is nothing wrong with switching off completely. But if you want to train, then make the time. Nobody is going to find it for you.
It Is A Choice, So Own It
The mistake I see is people who say they want to train while away, then do nothing and feel guilty about it. That is the worst of both worlds. You get no training and no proper rest.
So decide before you go. Either this is a real break and you enjoy it, or you are going to train, and you plan when and how. A decision made in advance is far easier to keep than one you try to make at the hotel bar.
Making The Time
If you choose to train, keep it simple. You do not need a gym or a partner to keep your skills alive:
- Short sessions first thing in the morning, before the day takes over
- Shadow work in your room, slow and precise
- Footwork and movement drills in any open space
- Mental rehearsal, running through techniques in your head with full detail
Twenty focused minutes beats an hour you never get round to. Consistency matters far more than volume.
Learning Faster
Time away from the club can actually be a good time to learn, because there is less noise. A few things that help anyone learn at a faster rate:
- Work on one thing at a time. Pick a single technique or principle and go deep
- Go slowly. Slow, correct repetitions build the movement properly. Speed comes later
- Ask why. Understand why a technique works, not just what it looks like. Once you know the principle you can apply it anywhere
- Review often. Short, regular reviews stick far better than one long session
When you get home, you will be surprised how much has sunk in.
Not Every Session Has To Be Physical
Watching good material, taking notes and thinking through how a principle applies to your own training all count. Some of my best insights have come when I was away from the mat and had time to think.
