Why do some people come out of a confrontation fine while others end up regretting it for the rest of their lives? It is not just about strength or fighting skill. It is about avoiding common mistakes that can turn a simple altercation into a serious situation. This video lesson breaks down those mistakes and how to avoid them.
It is for anyone who wants to protect themselves, and especially for people who train and might be tempted to think their skills make them safe.
The Mistakes That Cost People
Overconfidence and poor decision making are at the top of the list. Common mistakes include:
- Thinking you can handle it. Training is not a guarantee. Anyone can get hurt.
- Staying when you could leave. Ego keeps people in situations they should walk away from.
- Escalating. Words, gestures and pride turn an argument into violence.
- Not knowing when to stop. Once the threat is over, carrying on is no longer self-defence.
Stay Calm Under Pressure
Under stress your body floods with adrenaline. Your heart rate goes up, your vision narrows and your thinking gets worse. That is when bad decisions get made.
Staying calm is a skill, and it can be trained. Breathe. Keep your hands up in a non-threatening way. Speak calmly and clearly. Keep your distance and take an angle so you are not standing square in front of the other person.
De-escalate First
The best result in any confrontation is that nothing happens. De-escalation means lowering the temperature: calm words, giving the other person a way out, and being willing to walk away even when you think you are right.
If you are forced to defend yourself, do only what is needed, use reasonable force, and get away as soon as you can. The law looks at whether your response was reasonable, and a self-defence situation that turns into a fight can quickly become a very different matter in court.
Do Not Let One Moment Ruin Your Life
People lose their freedom, their jobs and their health over a few seconds of bad judgement outside a pub or in a car park. Do not let a street fight ruin your life. Learn to defend yourself, but learn even more about avoiding the need to.
