Does it matter if you have a slob bod or not for self-defence? That is the question I answer in this video lesson.

It is a fair question, and plenty of people worry about it. They look at the fit, young athletes in many martial arts classes and decide self-defence is not for them. This one is for anyone who has ever thought they are not in good enough shape to defend themselves.

What Fitness Gives You

Let me be honest. Being fit is an advantage. Better fitness means you can keep going for longer, recover faster from effort and, importantly, run away. Running away is one of the best self-defence techniques there is, and it is much easier if you are in decent shape.

So I am not telling you fitness does not matter. It does, and if you can improve it, you should.

What Fitness Does Not Give You

What fitness does not give you is skill. A six-pack does not teach you where to hit, how to take someone's balance, or how to stay calm when you are grabbed.

Most real self-defence situations are over in seconds. They are decided by awareness, a quick decision and one or two simple, effective actions. In that short window, knowing what to do matters far more than how you look.

Why Simple Methods Suit Everyone

This is why I like pressure points and balance points for self-defence. They do not ask you to be bigger, stronger or fitter than your attacker. They ask you to:

  • Recognise trouble early and avoid it if you can
  • Take the balance, even a little, before anything else
  • Hit the right target at the right angle
  • Use relaxed power rather than brute strength
  • Get away as soon as you can

Those skills work for people of all shapes, sizes and ages. Older and heavier students often do very well, because they stop trying to out-muscle anyone and start working smarter.

What You Should Do

Train the skills first, and improve your fitness alongside them at whatever level suits you. Walking, a bit of conditioning and regular practice all add up. Do not let your current shape stop you from starting.
