Can you learn self-defence online? That is the question in this short video lesson, and my answer is about how to do it with a trusted mentor.
A lot of people are sceptical, and I understand why. The internet is full of rubbish. But plenty of people have no good club nearby, train odd hours or simply want to learn at their own pace. This one is for them.
What Online Training Does Well
Good online training gives you some real advantages:
- You can watch a lesson as many times as you need
- You can slow it down and see the detail
- You can learn from someone you would never be able to train with in person
- You can train when it suits you, at home
For learning locations, angles and principles, video is excellent. You see exactly where to strike and how the body should move.
Where It Needs Help
What a screen cannot do on its own is feel your technique or correct your mistakes in real time. That is why the source matters so much. You need a trusted mentor, someone with real experience who explains why things work, not just a stranger showing off.
You also need a training partner. Most self-defence skills need a body to practise on. A friend or family member you trust is enough, as long as you both train with control and keep the power low.
How To Get Results
If you are going to learn online, do it properly:
- Pick one structured course and follow it in order rather than jumping between random clips
- Learn the principle behind each technique, not just the movement
- Practise slowly and correctly first, then add speed and a little resistance
- Film yourself and compare it with the lesson
- Keep training regularly, even in short sessions
When you can, add some in-person training too. A seminar, camp or private session will sharpen everything you have learned at home.
Is It Enough?
Online training will not turn you into a fighter overnight, and nothing will. But with good material, a trusted mentor and honest practice, you can absolutely learn useful, effective self-defence from home.
