Kata Bunkai is not what you think – or are told

When it comes to Kata Bunaki, one of the most ridiculous explanations I have heard, is that Kata A is for Strikes, Kata B is for Grappling, Kata C is for movement and so on and so forth.

I can’t begin to explain how dumb that thinking is – yet it still goes on!

You need to understand that the “shapes” that appear can mean FAR MORE than the first glance or the one application.

A similar / same shape can appear in all manner of situations – which means that a particular technique can be applied in all those situations – standing grappling, ground fighting, against the wall, on top underneath – the list and possibilities go on and on!

It is vitally important that you understand this principle BEFORE you start analysing your Kata!
